MRS. S. E. LEWIS IS CALLED AWAY

Final Summons Comes for Long-Time Member of Friends Group in Paonia, Colo.

Mrs. S. E. Lewis, who had been a resident of Paonia for 28 years died Saturday morning, May 20, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jesse Van Deren, on Lamborn mesa. Death was due to the infirmities of age and complications. She had been in failing health for a year. She was 79 years old.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev. H. R. Morris officiating. The services were largely attended by friends and there was a profusion of beautiful floral offerings.

Julia A. Barnett, daughter of Amos and Mary Barnett, was born near Richland, Iowa, January 26, 1854. At the age of five years she accompanied her parents overland to Washington, then a territory. The journey made in a covered wagon, required four months and was fraught with the dangers and hardships of the times. The family remained in Washington seven years and then returned to Iowa settling at Earlham.

She was married to Samuel E. Lewis, January 29, 1891. One daughter, Lena, now Mrs. Van Deren, was born to them. Coming to Paonia, 1905 they established a ranch home, and continued to live in the Paonia community until Mr. Lewis’s death in 1929. During the last few years Mrs. Lewis had spent some time in visiting elsewhere but Paonia remained her home.

She was a birthright member of the Friends church and was an active participant in church work throughout her life.

In a sketch of her life read at the funeral services she was characterized as a “loyal and consistent Christian; a good friend, and a kind and loving wife and mother.”

Surviving Mrs. Lewis besides her daughter are a grandson, Lawrence Taylor of Paonia; four sisters, Mrs. William Jackson and Mrs. E. S. Compton of Earlham; and Mrs. T. D. Barnett and Miss Rhoda Barnett of Whittier, California; three brothers, Joel Barnett of Whittier; M. B. Barnett of Las Vegas, Nevada; and C. J. Barnett of Jenkintown, Pennsylvania; a stepson, W. R. Lewis of Denver; and a step-grandson, Russell E. Millett, also of Denver.
