Thursday, March 31, 1932Jonathan Lewis Foster was born May 14, 1861, second son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert James Foster of Dublin, Wayne County, Indiana. His mother died when he was six years of age, and he and his brother were placed in a home for a year, after which he made his home with a Roberts family near Webster, Indiana until he was 18.
At that time he made a trip to Iowa, and a short time later came to Colorado and worked at Idaho Springs for a time. He returned to Indiana in 1880 and made his second trip to Iowa a short time later, locating near Earlham.
On April 29, 1891 he was united in marriage to Eva Kenworthy, fifth child of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Kenworthy of Earlham. To this union four children were born, Mrs. Jessie Bird of Atchee, Colorado, Dwight and Blaine Foster of Paonia, and Mrs. F. E. Clark of Taft, California.
His wife died in 1902 at Spokane, Washington, to which city the family had removed in 1897. The youngest daughter, Eva, thereafter lived with her aunt, Mrs. Lydia Griffin, Mr. Foster keeping the remainder of the family together until they were grown.
In 1904 the family came to Colorado, locating at Paonia, which has been their home ever since. On March 20, 1924, he married Miss Maude Rich at Delta, Colorado, who was his faithful helpmate until his death. She and the four children and seven grandchildren survive him. His only brother preceded him in death by four years.
