Mattie Phillips

Mattie Phillips, 93, who taught in the Pleasant Valley School before Hobson was a town died Sunday evening at St. Joseph's Hospital after a short illness.

Miss Phillips was born November 14, 1873, in Winterset, Iowa, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jonathan Phillips and received her early schooling in Iowa. She spent 82 years in the Hobson area and taught school for many years. When it became a law that a teacher must have a high school education, Miss Phillips went to school at Buffalo and got her diploma at the age of 48.

A few years ago she moved into the Valle Vista Manor. She had also been a music teacher and had her piano moved into the home and spent many hours with it and the other guests.

Survivors include-numerous nieces and nephews living in the Central Montana area.

Funeral services: will be held from the Hobson Methodist Church Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Harold Dover: officiating. The casket will not be opened at the church, but will be open at the. Creel-Gurnett-Retz Funeral Home until noon Wednesday. Interment will be in the Philbrook Cemetery, Hobson, Montana
