DOYLE LEE WOODS, Indianola

Doyle Lee Woods, 84, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away suddenly from a heart attack on Sunday, January 4, 2015, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 9, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. to greet friends. Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 10, in the Parrish Hall at the First United Methodist Church, Indianola with burial following in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Doyle was born in Washington Township, Clark County, Iowa, on November 24, 1930, the son of Elmer B. and Ethel Blanche (Mainard) Woods. He grew up in Adel and rural Truro, graduating from Murray High School in 1949. Doyle's freshman year of college was interrupted by service in the Korean War from 1950-1953. He was proud of his military service as a B-29 top gunner in the U.S. Air Force, and was thrilled to have joined nearly 500 veterans in the Central Iowa Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. this past September.

Doyle was a graduate of Simpson College and enjoyed a 28-year career as Director of Business and Finance at his alma mater. During his tenure, he oversaw a prolific period of construction for the college including campus landmarks Smith Chapel, Brenton Student Center, Dunn Library, and the Cowles Fieldhouse. Doyle used his financial management talents to assist the Des Moines Metro Opera during its formative years, and served on the board for many years. Doyle joined Clarke College, Dubuque, in 1987 and served as Vice President, Business and Finance for seven years until his retirement.

Doyle married Wilene M. Holden on September 5, 1954, put roots down in Indianola, raised three children, and enjoyed 25 years of marriage until her death in 1980. Doyle married Cloreta Miller in 1984, and they just celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary on December 29.

Doyle retired in 1993 and pursued many hobbies and interests including spending time with family, world travel, bird watching, and bike riding. He was a passionate master gardener, collecting and sharing over 600 varieties of hostas, and welcoming busloads of visitors for garden walks. For years, his personalized license plate read "Mr. Hosta." He was also a member of Indianola Lions and Rotary clubs, National Audubon Society, Master Gardeners, and the Russ O'Harra Hosta Society.

In addition to his wife, Cloreta, Doyle is survived by his sister Dorothy (Junior) Burgus, Murray; daughter Dana Woods, Urbandale; son Jon (Kay) Woods, West Des Moines; daughter Paula (Jim) Israel, Omaha, Neb.; and step daughters Raylene (Scott) Rospond, Fort Wayne, Ind., and Renee (Russ) Franks, Denver, Colo. Doyle and Cloreta also had 13 grandchildren including Justin, Benjamin and Maggie McNeill; Jacob and Bailey Woods; Jarryd (Christa) Israel and Laine (Devin) Jamshidi; Joshua, Heather, Bethany and Ethan Rospond; Parker and Aaron Franks; and one great grandchild, Rowan Jones.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and first wife, Wilene.

Memorials may be directed to the Doyle L. and Wilene M. Woods Endowed Scholarship at Simpson College.
