Michael D. (Mike) Holmes, 90, passed away Tuesday, December 9, 2014 in Winterset, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Friday, December 12, 2014 at the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset with Rev. Jim Howland officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, December 11, from noon to 8 PM at McCalley-Collins Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 PM. Burial with military honors will be in the Winterset Cemetery.

Mike was born June 12, 1924 at Winterset to Fred and Agnes (Picken) Holmes. He was a life-long resident of Madison County. Shortly after graduating from Winterset High School in 1942, Mike enlisted in the US Navy and served in the Pacific Theatre of WW II. In 1947, Mike married Ilene Ruth at Oakland, Iowa.

Mike was a self-employed electrical contractor in Winterset for 40 years. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and spending time with family and friends.

Mike was a member of the Masonic Lodge, First United Presbyterian Church, American Legion, V.F.W., and past member of the Winterset Rotary Club. He served his community as a volunteer

He is survived by his wife, Ilene; son, Steve; daughter, Becky; sister, Marjorie Emerson of Newton, Iowa; and many nieces. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Eugene F. Holmes and Herbert W. Holmes; and sisters, Helen Drake and Lucille Gray.
