Death Calls Spearfish Citizen

This community was saddened last Monday morning by the death of Samuel E. Porter, Mr. and Mrs. Porter have made their home in ‘spearfish only a short time but have made a host of friends who will mourn the passing of Mr. Porter.

Samuel Elmer Porter was born at Truro, Iowa, April 17, 1864 and died November 25, 1929 at his home in Spearfish. In 1883 at Des Moines, Iowa he was united in marriage to Miss Ada White and to this happy union were born five children, one Edith Rena passing away in infancy. The other living children are, two daughters, Mrs. C. P. Taylor of Casper, Wyo., Mrs. A. H. Faust of Rapid City, and two sons, Rolla Porter and Roy Porter of Lusk, Wyoming.

In 1900 his wife died at Lusk, Wyoming and on November 25, 1902 he was united in marriage to Emma Jane Sherrill at Hasting, Nebraska, who with a devoted stepdaughter, Mrs. Ella McGonagle survive him. Besides his wife and children Mr. Porter is survived by two sisters, Mary Gray and Mrs. Harry Plumb both of Oakland, Iowa, and four brother, Fletch Porter and Will Porter both of Truro, Iowa, Winfield Porter of Winterset, Iowa, and Edward Porter of Bridgeport, Nebraska.

Mr. Porter was one of the pioneers of Wyoming, coming to that state in 1895. He located on a homestead near Lusk, where he made his home until 1915, when he and Mrs. Porter moved to Wasta, South Dakota. Here he was engaged in the mercantile business, where he won the friendship of the entire community. In June 1928 he retired from business and came to Spearfish where he purchased a modern home on the Westside.

Mr. Porter was a kind and loving father and an affectionate husband, devoting the greater part of his time to his home and family. Since coming to Spearfish, he became a member of the local Methodist Church, and derived a great deal of good from his religious teachings. The Odd Fellow Lodge was the only other fraternal organization to which he belonged.

About nine months ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis and since that time he has not left his bed. Always he was a patient sufferer, appreciating to the fullest all that was done for him. Everything which medical science afforded was done for him and Mrs. Porter never once neglected his wants and comforts. For the past two months Mrs. Faust has spent most of the time at the bedside of her father. The two sons from Lusk arrived in Spearfish Monday evening to be with their mother and sister.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon from the Bhrens Funeral Parlors at Rapid City. Rev. C. D. Bullock of the local Methodist Church reading the service. Music was furnished by the quartette from Spearfish. The pallbearers consisted of his friends from Wasta.
