Sophronia Adelaide Smith, eldest daughter of James and Persis Smith, was born near Rockford, Ill., Aug, 19, 1859, and died at her home in St. Charles, March 19, 1944, at the age of 84 years.

She was married to Edwin P. Beitzell in St. Charles on Sept. 6, 1883, which union continued for over 60 years. To this union was born one son, who died in infancy, and one daughter, Ferne, now Mrs. C. D. Amos of Des Moines.

Besides her husband, she leaves a sister, Mrs. Mary F. Anderson of St. Charles, and a brother, Albert T. Smith of Cozad, Neb. One brother, C. D. Smith, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Beitzell taught school in Iowa for many years, and was for four years superintendent of Schools at Swan, Ia. She joined Chapter 33 of the P.E.O. society in 1892, and was a member of Chapter Q at Des Moines at the time of her death.

She united with the Congregational church in 1915, transferring later to the Methodist church in St. Charles in 1925.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 21, at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. Marguerite E. Shepard, under the direction of Reed’s Funeral service. Interment was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
