Quite a gloom was cast over Earlham when the news was received of the sad, untimely death of Peter S. McCourty, who, with his noble comrade, lost his life in the Des Moines street car wreck on Sept. 25. He came from Scotland to Earlham in 1896, being then 21 years of age, and remained in this vicinity for some years, making many good friends. About nine years ago he entered the employ of the Des Moines Street Car Co. He remained there ever since, a trusted and capable man at his work, till he met his much deplored death in the performance of his duty.

Not a few friends in Earlham deeply mourn his sad fate, and their sympathy goes out in all sincerity to his bereaved widow and baby-girl, and to his sorrowing brothers and sisters. One brother, Alexander, was with him when the end came, the others, with the sisters, are far separated. A young man of sterling character, upright, honorable and refined he endeared himself to all who knew him; was a man of good education, was valued by his employers, and looked up to by his fellow workers, whose advisor he was in business and true friend in daily life.

Dying at his post of duty he died as he had lived—true to his trust—no truer friend, no kinder comrade.

His was a brief life, cut off at 24 years, but a life that this world is better for having known.
