Former Winterset Merchant Dies in Marshalltown – 80 years Old
B. S. Todhunter, many years a business man of Winterset and Earlham, died in Marshalltown November 8 . The funeral and burial was at Peru Thursday.
Ben Todhunter lived many years in Winterset working in stores as clerk and owner. He ws one of the most popular men of his day, some unfortunate business transactions broke him after he moved to Earlham and later to Des Moines. He worked the rest of his business life paying off the judgments against him, over $4,000 and owed no man a dollar when he died. He lived in Marshalltown at the time of his death. B. S. Todhunter, a resident of Marshalltown for the past ten years and former Madison county man, died at 9:46 Tuesday night at his home, 7 ½ South Ninth street, of age debility. He had been in failing health for the last four years and his condition took a turn for the worse Sunday.
Mr. Todhunter was born August 29, 1852, in Layette county, Ohio, and he spent his early life there, coming to Iowa and Madison county with his parents when he was 17 years old. On October 8, 187l, he was married to Miss Minerva Jane Deardorff, in Madison county, where they lived until 1915, when they moved to Des Moines. Ten years ago they came to this city.
Besides his wife, he is survived by four children: E. R. Todhunter, Arlington; C. E. Todhunter, Chicago, Illinois; G. E. Todhunter and Mrs. R. C. Jones of Marshalltown. Another son, William, preceded him in death, one brother, A. G. Todhunter of Mitchell, South Dakota.
He was a member of the Friends church of this city and of the I.O.O.F. Lodge at Earlham.
The body is at the Estel funeral home, which will be open to friends from seven to nine o'clock Thursday evening. The body will be taken to East Peru early Thursday morning, accompanied by the widow and Mrs. R. C. Jones and son Robert and Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Todhunter of Arlington. Funeral services will be held from the Methodist church at East Peru at ten o'clock Thursday morning and burial will be in the Ebenezer cemetery near there.
