Page 8Lewis, son of Joseph and Hannah Thomas, was born in Guilford county, North Carolina, March 7th, 1818. He came to Lee county, Iowa, about 1837. Was married to Emily Mendenhall, May 25th, 1848. To this union was born ten children, seven of whom survive to mourn his loss. In 1893 they removed to Madison county, where they have since lived. Mrs. Thomas passed away one year ago. On April 16th at 1 o’clock p.m. he passed over the river which divides this life from the great beyond from which there is no returning. He was a member of the Friends church from childhood. Like Abraham of old, he was buried in a good old age, being 88 years, 1 month and 9 days old.
The funeral services were held at 10 a.m. April 18th, at the home of his son, John, Rev. James H. Prall officiating. Interment was at the Macksburg cemetery. Many friends gathered to assist in the last farewell to this one who had braved so many storms and bore the mark of many winters in his hair.
