Lewis Kimer, father of Sheriff Grant L. Kimer, died at the family home in this city, Sunday, February 3, 1907, at 2 p.m., after an illness covering several months. He had been better during the past few weeks than for some time and was up and around the house until Saturday morning, when shortly after he arose he took a relapse and again took his bed. Death came while he was surrounded by his wife and children and there was seemingly no struggle or pain. He knew the end was near and expressed a readiness and willingness to go.

Lewis Kimer was a native of Ohio, being born in Wayne county, May 11, 1836. He resided there until 1853, when with his parents he moved to Jefferson county, Ia. In 1854 he removed to Madison county, and after five years of residence there came across the line into Jackson township, Warren county, where the greater part of his life has been spent.

In his early life he learned the trade of an engineer and followed that vocation until he enlisted in the army, Aug. 13, 1862. He was a member of the Twenty-third Iowa Infantry, serving as drummer boy until the fall of Vicksburg, when, for bravery and meritorious conduct he was promoted to commissary of the regiment. This position he held until mustered out at Davenport, Aug. 12, 1865.

After his return from the army he took up farming in Jackson township and was active until in April, 1894, when he and wife came to Indianola to keep house for their son, Grant.

For over forty years he has been a resident of this county and was well and favorably known, always taking an active part in politics, local, state and national.

Mr. Kimer leaves a wife, who was Miss Isabelle Young, of Madison county, three children, Elizabeth S., now Mrs. C. C. Stiles of Des Moines, Grant L., and William L, and one son, Fremont, by a former marriage.

He united with the Methodist Episcopal Church many years ago and was true to the faith. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m., from the church of his choice at St. Charles, short services being held at the home early Tuesday morning by the Rev. G. W. L. Brown, his pastor here.

His wife and children mourn deeply the loss of this kind and loving husband and father, and have the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement.
