Barbara J. Kimzey, Indianola

Barbara J. Kimzey, 81, of Indianola, IA and formerly of New Virginia, IA, died Thursday, June 12, 2014 at her home.

Funeral service for Barbara Kimzey were held Tuesday, June 17 at the New Virginia United Methodist Church, the Reverend Keith Putney officiating. Burial at the New Virginia Cemetery.

The Overton Funeral Home of Indianola was in charge of arrangements.

Those considering an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the New Virginia United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Kimzey, the former Barbara Jean Hilton, was born May 27, 1933 in Indianola. She was the daughter of Paul Francis and Martha Lucille (nee Nine) Hilton. She moved as a young child with her family to New Virginia. She was a 1951 graduate of the New Virginia Consolidated High School.

Barbara was united in marriage to Albert Henry “Jake” Kimzey on November 3, 1951 at the then-Ft. Des Moines Methodist Church. Mr. Kimzey died March 24, 2009.

Barbara worked for Blue Line Moving and Storage in Des Moines before relocating to New Virginia. There, she worked as secretary at the New Virginia High School, before leaving to raise her family. She returned to the Interstate 35 Community School District as a nurse’s aide, and later a teacher’s aide at the New Virginia Elementary/Jr. High center of Interstate 35. In mid-1980, she became the secretary for the New Virginia/Medora United Methodist Church Parish. She retired in the early 1990s.

Barb and Jake owned and operated Barb’s Antiques in New Virginia. They were often fixtures at auctions and antique shows throughout central Iowa.

Barbara was an active member of the New Virginia United Methodist Church and a former member of the New Virginia American Legion Auxiliary and Order of the Eastern Star Chapters.

She is survived by her three children – Tala Lehmer of Clive, Renee Kimzey of Indianola and Mark Kimzey and his wife Linda of Mt. Pleasant; a sister, Billie Lou Davidson of Indianola; a brother, Steven Hilton, of Indianola; one sister in law; one brother in law, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother – Jerry Hilton, one son-in-law, Roy Lehmer and one granddaughter – Cassia Lehmer.
