Doris Louise Stanton 88, Lee's Summit, MO, passed away on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, MO. Services will be Thursday, June 5, 2014 at Grace United Methodist Church, 2400 E. U.S. Highway 50, Lee’s Summit, MO 64063. Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m. and the funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Lee's Summit Historical Cemetery.
Doris was born October 12, 1925, in Winterset, Iowa, the daughter of A. Frank and Mary Vesta Reed. She lived on farms and attended country schools in Madison County, Iowa through 8th grade, graduating from Winterset, Iowa High School in the class of 1943. She married William D. Stanton on March 18, 1944 in Moscow, Idaho where he was stationed with the US Navy. Bill and Doris were blessed with four children, Margaret, Paul, Jill and David.
During the years of World War II, Doris traveled with Bill when he was stationed with The US Navy in Idaho, Texas, Maryland, Washington DC, and California working as a cashier or secretary in those places. At the end of the war they moved to Kansas City where Doris worked as secretary at Minneapolis Honeywell before moving to Lee's Summit in 1950. After the children were in school, Doris was lunchroom cashier at Westview School for ten years. She worked in the office of the Lee's Summit United Methodist Church for seventeen years and retired as membership secretary in 1996. A member of the Lee's Summit United Methodist Church since 1952, Doris was very active in many church activities over the years, on committees and in leadership roles, choir-mother, Bible School and Sunday School teacher, and a member of United Methodist Women. In 1994 she received the Harry Denman Evangelism Award from the Missouri West Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, William D Stanton in 1978; her parents, Frank and Vesta Reed; two brothers, Phillip Reed and Lloyd Reed, a sister, Alice Ovitt; and three sisters-in-law, Thelma Reed, Virginia Reed, and Mamie Reed. She leaves to remember her two sons, Paul Stanton and wife Diane, and David Stanton and wife Ditas, both of Lee's Summit, MO: two daughters, Margaret Gunderson and husband James of Columbia, MO and Jill Whaley and husband Bart of Belton, MO: eleven grandchildren, Jennifer Napier and husband Jeb, Peter Gunderson, Jason, Seth , Sarah and Joshua Stanton, Andrew Whaley and wife Cheree, Amy Williams and husband Bennett, Jessica Shearer and husband Michael, Joseph and Megan Stanton; eleven great grandchildren, Kayla Gunderson and Alex Napier, Cole, Adeline, and Ella Williams, Jayden and Naya Whaley, Elijah Stanton, Ocean and Nation Shearer, and Mason Stanton. She also leaves three brothers, Dale Reed, Ernest Reed, and Claire Reed and wife Shirley, all of Buffalo, MO; a sister-in-law, Joyce Reed of Hewitt, TX and a brother-in-law, Duwayne Ovitt of Plano, IL; brothers and sisters of her husband and their families, as well as many dear and beloved friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Lee's Summit Social Services, 108 SE 4th St, LSMO 64063, to Autism Speaks, PO Box 26401, Lehigh Valley, PA 18002-6401, or to the Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Rd., Kansas City, MO 64145.
