Leonard C. Mains - Indianola (formerly of Winterset)
Apr. 6, 1922 - May 31, 2014

Leonard Carl Mains, 92, of Indianola, Iowa (formerly of Winterset) went to join his Lord on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society in Indianola.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, June 7, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with Rev. Dr. Beverlee Bell and Rev. Phil Webb officiating. Interment will follow at the Winterset Cemetery with military honors.

Leonard was born April 6, 1922 to Jesse E. Mains and Bessie Messinger Crawley Mains in Glendon in Guthrie Co, IA. He attended rural school and graduated from Guthrie Center High School in 1941. He served in the US Army at Fort Knox, KY from 1943 - 1946 becoming a Staff Sergeant. Leonard attended Iowa State University and Simpson graduating in 1952. He met Arlene Elaine Hager and they were married July 24, 1949 at Casey, IA. They have two children, Lyle Carl and Linda Carol. He later received a Masters from Drake University.

Leonard taught in rural schools at Keokuk, IA, and Winterset. He was an Elementary Principal in Winterset for 30 years before retiring in 1986. Leonard was a member of the Winterset First United Methodist Church, a founding member of the Winterset Kiwanis club being active for over 50 years, and other clubs.

Leonard is survived by his wife Arlene of over 64 years; son, Lyle of Tyler, TX; daughter, Linda (Jim)Tutt of Indianola, IA; grandchildren, Bill (Jeanne) Tutt, Bob (Kerri) Tutt, and Becky (Erik) Stumpf; Lyle's step-children, Lori, Chris, and Mike Adams; great grandchildren, Sophia Tutt, Maura Tutt, and Zoe Stumpf; sister-in-law, Betty Greenwalt; nephews and nieces, Larry (Joyce) Crawley, Luann (Jack) Waldo, Pam (Joe) Thiner, Deloris Thomas, Don (Jen) Hager, Dan (Kamma) Christensen, Doug (Carol) Christensen, Dale (Brenda) Christensen, Dennis (Beth)Christensen, and Daryl (Julie) Christensen; and other family and friends.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Loyd Crawley and wife Edith; sister, Clarice Mains; nephew, Louis Crawley and wife Edna; and great granddaughter, Doria Stumpf.

Leonard never liked to say 'good-bye'. He would say, "It isn't 'good-bye' it is 'so long'."

The family would suggest memorials to: Winterset First United Methodist Church, Winterset Community Educational Foundation, or Indianola First United Methodist Church.
