MARY LUCILE SMITH, Michigan

SMITH, Mary Lucile was Promoted to Glory Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at Fostrian Court, Assisted Living, Flushing. The celebration of Lucile's life will be 11:30 AM Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the Flint Citadel Salvation Army, 211 W. Kearsley St., Flint. Visitation will be 2–4 and 6-8 PM Friday February 7 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd, Swartz Creek and from 10 AM until the time of service on Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Flint Citadel Salvation Army Band or Flint Citadel Songsters.

Lucile was born on a farm near Winterset, Iowa, on September 23, 1917 the eldest daughter of Jay G. and Lois I. Mills. The family moved to Flint, Michigan, December 1926. She graduated from Flint Central High School in 1935. Lucile married James Smith, Jr on August 21, 1937. She worked at AC Spark Plug then at the Salvation Army as a receptionist, and later for the Flint Board of Education School System, retiring in 1978. Lucile and Jim joined the Salvation Army Flint Citadel Corps in 1951. She served as a Sunday school teacher, held several leadership positions, and has been a strong supporter of the Flint Citadel Band and Songsters.

Lucile and Jim resided in Flint Michigan until 1968, when they moved to their retirement home in Swartz Creek, Michigan, she was a founding member of the Genesee Valley Two-Cylinder Club, belonged to the Michigan Association of Retired School Persons, and the Michigan Education Association. Lucile was an avid reader, loved to travel and keep in touch with friends and relatives with cards, letters and phone calls. She loved music, played piano, loved the Salvation Army Band, hymns, choruses and concerts.

Lucile is survived by son Richard James and wife Genevieve, grandson Ronald and wife Marcy, granddaughter Sheila, grandson Timothy, also Genevieve's children and grandchildren, plus special “grandsons” Mark Schultheiss and Jentry Speck, many nieces and nephews, and cousins, and a host of other very special extended church family.

She was preceded in death by son, George Donald, husband James, her parents; brother James Mills, sister Mabel Budzinski and daughter-in-law, Donna Smith. She will be greatly missed.
