Mr. Ed. Williams Dies at Clarinda

Mr. Edward Williams who was taken to the Iowa Hospital for the Insane at Clarinda early in March for treatment for insanity, died at that institution Sunday under circumstances particularly distressing. His case had not been considered a violent one, and Ed. Williams never was considered as of the type of mental defective who would become violent, nevertheless the last days of his life were rendered a horror by ravings and physical demoralization that necessitate close confinement and eventually terminated in death, due to exhaustion terminating in heart failure. The body was brought to Earlham Tuesday morning and funeral services held at Penn Center Church, conducted by Rev. Walter Girdner, pastor of the Early Chapel Church of Christ. Interment was at Penn Center.

Mr. Williams is survived by a wife and six children, Sherman, of Stuart, Mrs. John Wilson, of Adel, and Clark, John, Golda and Byrd, residing at home. All were present at the funeral Tuesday, as was a brother, Byrd, of Estherville, Iowa. The remaining brother, Robert, of Mt. Carmel, Ill., was absent.

Mr. Williams was born April 5, 1867, having attained the age of 53 years and a fraction when death overtook him.

Mr. Williams’ mental unbalance first came to particular notice on the 5th of last March when he returned from a visit with his brother in Illinois in a condition of evident irresponsibility. His brother had undertaken to accompany him back to Earlham on account of his condition, but the two became separated at Montrose, Iowa, when Ed, left the train to enter a restaurant and was left behind. Robert Williams got in touch with his brother at Des Moines and brought him on to Earlham, and at this time it was deemed advisably to commit him to the asylum for treatment. He was therefore taken to Winterset by county officers and thence to Clarinda.

Edward Williams

Edward Williams, son of August and Sarah Williams, was born in Wabash county, Illinois on the fifth day of April in the year of 1876 and departed this life on the thirtieth day of October, 1920, at the age of 53 years, 6 months and 25 days.

He was united in marriage to Miss Rilla Goldman on the 19th day of July, 1896. To this union were born six children: Sherman D., of Stuart; Mrs. John Wilson, of Adel; Clark E., John A., Golda C., and Byrd E., all of whom are living.

In early life he gave his heart to God and united with the Christian church at Gards Point, Illinois. Later his membership was transferred to the United Presbyterian church at Pitzer. Mr. and Mrs. Williams establish their home at Mount Carmel, Illinois where they lived until they moved to Madison county in 1907 where the family still reside.

Besides his wife and children he leaves to mourn his loss, two brothers, Bert Williams, of Estherville, and Robert S. Williams, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, and a host of neighbors and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Penn Center church on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Walter Girdner, pastor of the Early Chapel, and interment was made in Penn Center cemetery.
