Elma Hall was born near Damascus, Ohio, on March 3, 1854, where she lived until December 15, 1900, when she with her widowed mother moved to Earlham, Iowa. Shortly after removing here it was manifest that her health was failing, and after getting treatment and advice from three prominent physicians, and they being united in the belief that her mind was impaired, recommended the hospital at Clarinda as the most suitable place for proper treatment in her case and she was taken there.

On May 18th her mother received a dispatch that she was dangerously ill, and took the first train to reach her as soon as possible. She arrived at the hospital on the morning of the 20th, and found her more comfortable than she had been. She was cheerful and enjoyed her mother’s visit. Her attendants thought her in a favorable condition and expected a speedy recovery. About 4 o’clock p.m. her mother took leave of her and started home. She remained very comfortable till 8 o’clock p.m. when she was taken with difficulty of breathing and sinking away. All was done possible to revive her, but to no avail, and at 8:30 p.m. she passed away, aged 47 years, 2 months and 17 days.

The funeral services were held in the Friends church on last Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. W. Stribling. The remains were laid away in Earlham cemetery.
