Thursday, April 4, 1901Margrett Mendenhall was born in Green county, Ohio, July 18, 1821, and died at the residence of her son-in-law, Perry M. Hadley, March 23, 1901, aged 79 years, 8 months, 15 days.
She was married to John Allen in 1844, with whom she lived 56 years. To this most happy union was born one son and three daughters, all of whom survive her. In 1854 she, with her husband and family, arrived in Iowa where they have lived for 47 years, and were among the oldest settlers of Madison county.
She was a birthright member of Friend’s Church, was converted quite early in life, from which time she lived an earnest Christian; and later in life when living so farm from meeting as to be deprived of church privileges, she would gather her family about her and with God’s word and consecrated ability direct them in the way of eternal life. Her voice was often heard in earnest supplication or with tender loving messages of comfort in the congregation of the people. Her end was a most triumphant one; to her, death had no terror. When spoken to of her prospects she said: “I am ready, let the call come when it may!”
A short time before the end she said: “I have no hopes now of getting well but I am going where Jesus and Pa are.” Thus quietly but triumphantly at the noon hour of March 23, 1901, passed to her reward an earnest Christian, a faithful wife, a loving mother; a truly kind neighbor. She leaves one son, three daughters and many relatives and friends to mourn her loss.
