John Allen was born in Green county, Ohio, Sept. 1, 1822, and died at his residence northwest of Earlham on Saturday, January 5, 1901, his age being seventy-eight years, four months and four days.

He was married to Margarett Mendenhall of Newton, Indiana, in 1844, with whom he lived for fifty-seven years. To this union was born four children all of whom survive him. In 1846 he moved from Ohio to Indiana, and again to Iowa in 1854 in which state he has been a resident for forty-seven years, on one of the earliest settlers of Madison county.

Quite early in life the Holy Spirit won his heart for the Savior and with unwavering confidence and undaunted courage he pursued the narrow but royal way to the date of his death. Becoming conscious of his need of Christian fellowship and being convinced of the doctrine as hold by the Friends church he, with his children, applied and were received into the membership in 1874, in which he lived to the glory of God and to the honor of the church. His regularity in attendance upon the services of the church, his active interest in all the affairs, his earnest prayers and definite testimonies will make his absence an --------- loss.

When the tidal wave of salvation swept over the church in soul saving and sanctifying power he sought under the appointed ministry of John Henry Douglas the full and complete victory over sin and was consciously sealed of the spirit. Love, joy and peace became even and overflowing and the power of this grace procured from him constant victory. As a neighbor he was kind and benevolent, always ready to lend a helping hand in the hour of need.

As a father he was watchful for both the temperal and spiritual interests of his household and under the glow of the sacred altar his children early found their Savior and with timely counsel delivered them from the evil one.

His death was an unlooked for event by both his relatives and friends. His sickness was short and when conscious the suffering intense. During the few days of suffering, he slowly sank into death as fades the western light in the deepening gloom of twilight and at the noon hour on Friday, the 5th of January, 1901, life’s lamp flickered for a moment under the damp chill of death and went but leaving his loved ones with the lifeless form of a once true husband and a kind and loving father. He leaves an aged companion, one son and three daughters and many relatives to mourn his death.

The funeral was held at Bear Creek ------- and interment was in the Bear Creek cemetery.
