In 1849 he came to Iowa and to Madison county in December 1849 and has lived in South township continuously.

In 1852 he was married to Lucy A. Smith, to whom were born ten children, three boys and seven girls. There are living at present and surviving him his wife and eight children as follows: Miss Sarah Fife, Mrs. Alice Vanatta, Mrs. Ella Atkins, Mrs. Cora Durham, Albert Fife, Mrs. Jennie Snider, Cassius C. Fife, and Mrs. Artie Moore.

Mr. Fife has always been an exemplary citizen and in one of the sturdy pioneers who helped to make this country what it is today. With his death and that of Lewis Crawford a short time ago, it leaves J. T. Rhyno the only surviving Mexican war veteran in Madison county.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon and the body laid to rest in the St. Charles cemetery.
