June 1904Jeremiah R. Libby was born in Sussex county, Delaware, August 25, 1816. Departed this life June 26, 1904, at the home of his eldest son, W. C. Libby, in Earlham, Iowa, aged 87 years 10 months and 1 day. He moved with his parents to Ohio in 1827. From there to Illinois in 1834. Afterward came to Iowa in 1840. He settled in Mahaska county in May 1843, being one of the first settlers, and always claimed this county as his home.
He was married Jan. 18th, 1846, to Elizabeth S. Higginbotham who died in 1879. To this union was born nine children, eight of whom survive him, viz.: Mary Fox of Portland, Oregon; W. C. Libby and Ida Price, Earlham, Iowa; Harriett Lighter, Ft. Collins, Col.; Chas. Libby, Ft. Scott, Kan.; Elizabeth Wells, Anita, Iowa; Jas. Libby, Belmond, Iowa, and Jerry Libby, Valley Junction, Iowa.
He was converted in 1866 and died strong in the Christian faith, longing to be at rest.
He was a kind and loving husband and father, a good citizen, a neighbor ever ready and willing to help in whatever was needed.
Beside his children, twenty-three grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren are left to mourn his departure.
Funeral services were held at the home of his son in Earlham at nine o’clock a.m. Tuesday, conducted by Rev. Whitehead and the remains were taken to Leighton, Mahaska county, for burial.
