Earlham

The funeral service of Mrs. Barclay Stanton of Des Moines, was held at the Friends church Thursday morning, in charge of Rev. Nelson. Interment was made in the Earlham cemetery.

Mrs. Stanton was a sister of M. D. Hill and many years of her young womanhood were spent in Earlham. After Mr. and Mrs. Stanton were married, they lived on the farm now occupied by Jesse Hester and also lived in Earlham for some time. Mr. Stanton has many friends here who will sympathize with him and his daughter in the loss of a Christian wife and mother.

Into the rugged, sturdy, pioneer home of Matthew and Fannie Hill near Winchester, Ind., came a blue-eyed, winsome baby girl, Charlotte, on March 15, 1858. She was the youngest of seven children, three girls and four boys.

Her girlhood and early womanhood were spent near the old homestead.

About 1883 she came to Earlham, Iowa, where he four brothers were already well established. She took a position in her brother M. D. Hill’s bank, remaining there until her marriage with Barclay Stanton, March, 1887.

The new home was near or in Earlham until 1873 when they moved to Perry. About twelve years later they moved to Des Moines where the home is today.

Mrs. Stanton was a birthright member of the Friends Church till her removal to Perry. There she joined the Methodist Church, later transferring her membership to the Grace M. E. church of Des Moines.

In the early morning of Feb. 7, 1923, after an illness of several months, the portals of time swung aside and she entered the joys of eternity.

A daughter Florence, along with the husband, shared the wealth of affection and kindly ministrations of this devoted mother and wife, and are now bereft. Mrs. Stanton is also survived by one brother, M. D. Hill, and one sister, Mrs. Isaac Horn, both of Whittier, California.

Thus briefly and imperfectly is told the will-filled, quiet gracious, uplifting life of a Christian woman beyond life’s toll and cares.

Funeral services were held at the Friends Church in Earlham Thursday morning Feb. 8 at eleven o’clock. The service was conducted by the pastor Rev. Nelson, who drew inspiration from his remarks from the 23rd Psalm. Interment was in Earlham Cemetery.
