Sophia Battice was born in England Aug. 21, 1839 and passed away at her home in Winterset, March 19, 1923 at the age of 83 years, 6 months and 28 days. Her early life was spent in England, Mrs. Stephenson coming to New York in June, 1855.

She was united in marriage to Frederick Stephenson, June 13, 1857. To this union five children were given, all surviving the parents and living in the following places: Mrs. Jennie V. France of Winterset, Mrs. Louise E. Preece of Canada, Mrs. Fannie Caroline Smith of Macksburg, Wm. R. Stephenson of Patterson and James F. Stephenson of Cooper, Iowa. One brother, William Battice of Winterset, one sister, Mrs. Sarah A. Blanchard of Odell, Ill.; two nephews and 17 grandchildren and many other relatives and friends mourn the loss of the deceased.

Mrs. Stephenson was one of those heroic women of civil war times and gave her services freely as a nurse during the conflict. To be able to alleviate suffering and misery was a great comfort to her. She cherished her war record to the last.

She united with the M.E. church in Winterset under the pastorate of Rev. Cable and remained faithful to the end. Funeral services were held at the home on Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. D. J. Shenton.
