Mary Ann Nickell was born in Ohio June 23, 1839 and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. W. Rippey of Lincoln township, on June 29, 1923 at the age of 84 years and 6 days.
While a small child she came with her parents to Iowa, where she spent the remainder of her life, most of which was in Madison county. She was married to Benjamin Johnson of Leon, on Feb. 25, 1855. To this union were born four children, three sons and one daughter, the daughter dying in infancy. John passed away about 10 years ago. Joseph of Hood River, Ore, and Benjamin of Dockley, Calif., survive her. Her husband, who was a civil war veteran, died soon after the war. Therefore, Mrs. Johnson had the trials and hardships of a mother through the war and during the dark days following.
On Dec 16, 1869, she was married to James E. Weeks. To this union were born seven daughters, two of who died in infancy. Those who remain are: Mrs. Mary H. Jickling and Mrs. Zoa I. Rippey of Winterset;; Mrs. Dulcie I. Emerson of Peru, Mrs. Martha V. Wimmer of Bozeman, Mont.; Mrs. Ollie L. Bolton of Ainsworth, Nebr. She also leaves two brothers, George and Andrew Nickell of Oklahoma, 19 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Mr. Weeks died July 3, 1918.
In her early life she was an earnest worker in the Baptist church. After her marriage she became a member of the Methodist church and was a zealous worker for her Master. She was holding membership in the Methodist church at Macksburg at the time of her death.
Funeral services were conducted from the Blue Front church Sunday afternoon by E. B. Chancellor, minister of the Winterset Church of Christ. Burial was made in the Hamblin cemetery.
