J. W. Smith

James Watson Smith, son of John and Rebecca Smith was born August 7, 1843 in Morgan county, Illinois. He came with his parents to Iowa in 1854 and settled in Madison county.

He became a Christian early in life and took an active part in the Sunday school, serving as superintendent before uniting with the church. He later united with the M. E. church which he served faithfully until his death. He was for a number of years, superintendent of the Sunday school at Truro and two years in Winterset.

He was married to Miss Belle C. Walker, Nov 14, 1869. To this union were born nine children, five sons and four daughters, all of whom are now living, except one son who died some years ago, and a daughter who died in infancy.

For a number of years Mr. Smith was a teacher in the public schools, after which he engaged in mercantile business.

He was elected to the office of county treasurer in 1900, serving five years in that capacity.

Nearly three years ago, he suffered the loss of his eyesight and since that time, he has been afflicted in body more or less, but through it all he has manifested the sweet Christian patience and resignation. Since his affliction, he has been unable to attend the means of grace, but has retained his faith and trust in God.

Funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. J. L. Johnson, June 5th at the M. E. church of East Peru, and the remains interred in the Ebenezer cemetery near the old homestead.
