Henry Cobus Leasman, son of Mary and Cabot Leasman, was born in Hanover, Germany, October 18, 1839 and passed away at his home six miles north of Lorimor, August 6, 1920, aged 80 years, 10 months and 12 days.
Mr. Leasman came with his parents to America in the year 1857 and they located near Petersburg, Illinois where they resided until 1865 when they removed to near Winterset in Madison county, Iowa. On October 3, 1868, he was married to Miss Mary Bardrick and in the year of 1869 they moved to their present farm six miles north of Lorimor where he resided continuously until his death.
At the age of fourteen he was confirmed in the Lutheran church in Germany and steadfastly held to that belief until his death.
Nine children were born to Henry Cobus and Mary Leasman, all of whom with the wife and mother survived him. Children are C. H. Leasman, of Barney; Mrs. Anna Rapp, of Morristown, South Dakota; Mrs. Emma B. Kipple, of Bay City, Michigan; and Jennie L., Elmer E., Jesse L. and Fred B. Leasman who make their home at the old homestead. All the children were present at the funeral. He also leaves one brother to mourn his death, Brown Leasman, of Lincoln, Illinois, but he was unable to be present at the funeral.
Mr. Leasman was a man of extraordinary physical power; had a giant-like form and for several years after first locating south of Winterset near the boundary line of Scott and Walnut townships did two men’s work in clearing off hazel brush and timber. This hard pioneer work he continued when he removed to the vicinity of the present town of Barney. He stayed right on his job until he became owner of one of the largest farms in the county.
Throughout the more than fifty years residence in that place he made a record for at least three things: Dealing and stock, boating the democratic ticket and playing checkers. There were few people in that part of the county who could compete with him in either of these branches of industry and all of which afforded him pleasant recreation.
At one time he proceeded to organize a Sunday School at his neighboring school house which showed that he was at heart solicitous about the moral condition of the neighborhood, although he did not always practice Sunday School ethics. There were many traits in Henry Leasman’s character which were admirable and he will be greatly missed in the community where he for a half-century lived and wrought.
Funeral services were held from the home Tuesday, August 10, at 2 o’clock and interment made in the cemetery which he donated to the community years ago near Barney. The five sons of the family, C. H., Ilot, Elmer E., Fred B., and Jesse L. Leasman and a son-in-law, Mr. Rapp, acted as pall bearers. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Carl Brown, pastor of the Lorimor M. E. church.
