Page 1Death of Mrs. L. W. Harrell
Mrs. Martha Scott Harrell died on August 13th at her home in Scott township, aged 79 years. She had been afflicted with blindness for the last five years, her youngest son, Cleveland, making his home with her that she might be cared for.
Her parents, William and Mary Scott, came from Jackson county, Indiana to Madison county nearly 56 years ago and for 52 years Mrs. Harrell had lived in the home where she passed away. From girlhood, she had been a strong church woman, first uniting with the Baptist church in Indiana then with the Christian Union church at Zion. Lewis W. Harrell, whom she married in 1867, died eleven years ago.
Seven children survive their mother: Mrs. Laura Holmes of Elida, N.M.; Mrs. Maggie Schoenenberger, of Peru; Mrs. Ida Sellers, Frank and Cleveland, all of this county; Mrs. Hattie Deal of Newton, Kans., and William C. of Hastings, Nebr.
Rev. George D. Rogers conducted the funeral services, which were held at Zion church on Tuesday afternoon, when a large congregation of persons assembled to pay their last tribute to their beloved neighbor and friend.

Mrs. Martha Scott Harrell, daughter of William and Mary Scott, was born February 26, 1843 in Jackson county, Indiana and passed away at her home near Winterset, August 13, 1922, at the age of 79 years, 5 months and 17 days.
She united with the Baptist church in her girlhood days in Indiana and afterward with the Christian Union church at Zion and has lived a consistent Christian life ever since.
She was united in marriage to Lewis William Harrell, March 14, 1861 who preceded her to the heavenly home may 10, 1911. They moved to Madison county, Iowa nearly 56 years ago and has lived at the present home for more than 52 years. To this union were born 9 children, an infant daughter who died at birth; William Cass Harrell, Hastings, Nebraska; Mrs. Laura Holmes, Elida, New Mexico; Mrs. Maggie Schoenenberger, Peru; Mrs. Hettie Deal, Newton, Kansas; Mrs. Ida Sellers, Winterset, John Harrell who died at the age of 16 years; Frank and Cleveland Harrell, of Winterset.
She was of a patient, lovable disposition and for the past 5 years had patiently endured the sad affliction of being blind during which time she was tenderly cared for by her youngest son Cleveland; who lived with her.
Funeral services were held at the Zion church on Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Rev. Geo. D. Rogers of the Baptist church conducted the services. A very large number of neighbors and friends gathered at the church to pay their respects to one of the old pioneers of the county. Mrs. Harrell had lived for 57 years in the same house.
