The funeral of Priscilla Hill was held at the Methodist church on Wednesday afternoon. Rev. Watson, formerly Mrs. Hill’s pastor here, but now of Ankeny, preached the sermon. She had planned and written out her wishes as to who should conduct the service, the chapter to read, and many other things concerning her funeral. Each of her children had a letter written and sealed, from her, a message to be read after their mother was gone. Mrs. Hill had been a Methodist practically all her life and died in the faith of Christ which was designated in the obituary she had written herself, some of it many years ago. This good woman will be much missed by her family, friends, church and neighbors.

Three of her children with their families were present at the funeral. Dell Hill and wife of Denver, Clinton Hill and wife of Des Moines, and Mrs. Addie Pearson and husband of Earlham; Bert Hill, the oldest son, is in Mexico, and was unable to be present. They have the sympathy of the whole town in the loss of their mother.

Death Takes Toll of One of Community’s Most Valued Lives

The entire community participated equally in the sense of loss almost irreparable that came Tuesday morning in the knowledge of the death of Mrs. Priscilla Hill. The spirit of this dear old lady, whom to know was to love and revere, slipped away in the early hours of the morning just as the sun rose over the eastern position, to that eternal destiny to -------. The memory of her is like the still small voice that beckoning on through the shadows and sorrows of this earthly existence.

One cannot estimate the influence of a life like Mrs. Hill’s. She did not achieve greatness, but she was truly great. Her gentle and unselfish ministration to others, her devotion to her friends and her religion set her apart from things worldly. It is given to few of us to live a life like hers and to leave the impression that her life did.

The funeral service was held at the Methodist Church at 2:30 o’clock Thursday afternoon and followed a plan determined by Mrs. Hill years ago. Rev. Louis Watson, of Ankeny, her minister a few years ago, conducted the rite. His was a touching tribute to her memory and a message of hope. In a body sat the members of the Ladies Aid Society, in which organization Mrs. Hill took an active part as long as her health permitted, and always an active interest. The floral token were many in number and of beautiful character. Acting as honorary pallbearers were Mrs. M. H. Bunnell, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, Mrs. Weatherly, Mrs. T. E. Stanley, Mrs. P. L. Stanley and Mrs. Lida Farris, the active pallbearers were H. S. Thomson, W. H. Dudley, Orman Osborn, Scott McKibben, Geo. Bricker and E. L. Scar. These with the L.A.S. members and the six ladies of the flower committee, preceded the casket as it was born from the church, the ladies forming a double file enclosing the funeral march.

The following obituary was read at the service:

Priscilla Hill was born October 7, 1844 in Deublin, Wayne County, Ind. being the third daughter of John and Patience Leake. She was married to Jesse W. Hill October 19, 1861. To this union were born five children: Charlotte Eudora, who died in infancy, Albert S., Adelbert K., Addie E., and Clinton R.

The family moved to Joe Davis County, Ill. in 1863 and to Rangor, Marshall County, Iowa in 1865. In 1869 they removed to Henry County, Iowa and finally to Earlham in 1874.

The husband Jesse Hill was raised in the Conservative Friends faith, having a birthright membership in the Jericho, Indiana, Meeting. Mrs. Hill was raised in the Methodist faith at Winchester, Ind. It can truly be said that she always trusted in the Lord for help and guidance in all the trials and troubles of life. She found in Him an ever present helper in time of trouble and brought up her children in the spirit of devotion to Him who doeth all things well.

Grandmother Hill passed away on Tuesday morning, May 24 at 5:36, being 76 years, 7 months and 17 days of age. In addition to the members of the immediate family, she leaves a host of neighbors and friends who will sadly miss her cheerful smile and words of courage and faith.
