Lois Howard passed away peacefully from congestive heart failure on Sunday, September 8, 2013 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines, Iowa.
Lois Ilene Palmer was born November 8, 1917 in Macksburg, IA to Loman Lee Palmer and Ethel Gladys McKinney Palmer.
Lois graduated from Macksburg Consolidated High School in 1935. After graduation and receiving her teaching certificate at Simpson College, she taught at three different one- room country schools, teaching first through eighth grades.
Lois and Raymond Eugene Howard were married by a Justice of the Peace in Bethany, Missouri on January 1, 1943.
Lois worked for Bankers Life Insurance from 1960 thru 1968. In 1969 she became the manager of Runnells branch of the Hartford Carlisle Savings Bank. She loved her job and remained there until her retirement in December 1982.
After retiring in 1982, Lois joined the Runnells Kountry Kut-Ups Kitchen Band and was an active member until they disbanded in 2005.
Lois is survived by her children Durwood (Sue) Howard and Cheryl (John) Northway. Her grandchildren Eric Northway, Andy (Amy) Northway, Greg (Christine) Howard, Cate (Trevor) Kelly, Nick Bell, eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Lois was preceded in death by her husband Raymond, her parents, Loman and Ethel Palmer, one sister, Helen (Palmer) Goad, and two brothers Don Palmer, and Max Palmer.
Lois had a very positive outlook about life. In later years, she loved going to the Runnells Community Center to play cards and visit with leader Jeanne Beck and the seniors. Lois loved sports and was a true, long time supporter of the Chicago Cubs. She was a very devoted mother and grandmother and was always interested in the activities of her family. She loved working in her flowers and yard.
Lois was a member of the Macksburg Methodist Church and enjoyed attending The Runnells Christian Church for many years.
The family would like to thank the people of Runnells for all the cards, flowers, prayers and words of support extended to our family during her illness. We would also like to express our appreciation to the staff at Taylor House in Des Moines for their kind and loving care shown to Lois and her family .They are all very special people.
Services will be held at Runnells Christian Church, 100 E. Maple St, Runnells, IA, on Wednesday, September 11, beginning with a visitation at 3:00 p.m. followed by a Celebration of Life service at 4:00 p.m. After a short interment service for the family, friends are invited to share memories at a luncheon at the church .
Memorial contributions may be made to the Runnells Christian Church Youth Scholarship Fund or the Runnells Senior Citizen Center. Memorials can be made at Petersonfuneralservice.com
