ROGER L. GIBBENS, Winterset

January 24, 1954 - September 7, 2013

Roger died Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines from congestive heart failure due to complications of Guillain-Barré syndrome. He was 59.

A memorial service will be held 3 p.m., Wednesday, September 11, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset, where his family will be present to receive friends for one hour prior to the services beginning at 2 p.m.

Roger has been cremated and his cremated remains will be buried in the Oakfield Cemetery in Brayton, Iowa at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.

Roger Lee Gibbens was born in Corydon, Iowa on January 24, 1954, the son of Virginia Ruark.
Roger was united in marriage to Lorraine Schutt on July 1, 1978 at the Brayton Lutheran Church. He was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church and was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset.

During his working career Roger had worked at Roe Machine and Pattern Works in Omaha as a machinist and later moved to Winterset in 1995 and worked with Mahle. His last employment was as a custodian for the Winterset Schools.

Roger was not one to join organizations but loved yard work and gardening. He also loved old tractors and farm equipment but his greatest love was his family and any time he spent with them.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Gibbens of Winterset; daughter, LaRee Gibbens-Allen and her husband, Josh of Earlham; a granddaughter, Marriah Allen and his four siblings, Becky Gibbens of Creston; Larry (Dana) Gibbens of Des Moines; Cindy Gibbens of Des Moines and Leonard Gibbens of Council Bluffs. He is also survived by an uncle and aunt, Raymond and Linda Ruark of Centerville; extended relatives and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
