Herbert W. Kingery began his eternal life on Labor Day, September 2, 2013 at Taylor House Hospice with his loving family at his side. He had battled cancer for more than 20 years in his good natured, quiet and determined manner. His Arizona Mayo doctors were outstanding but no one could see the whole picture like "our" Dr. Corrine Ganske and "our" nurse Jackie. Thank you for making our life better.

Herb was born in Madison County, IA to George Wright and Ella Ruth (Wiley) Kingery on September 16, 1928. He graduated from Patterson High School and operated a service station there before joining the Army.

He met his wife, Doris Jean Faux at Uncle David's home in Patterson. Thanks Wanda and Willis! They were married May 1, 1952 in Winterset, IA and lived in Madison County for a short time. They were blessed with five children. Together they raised daughter, Joyce (Bill) Webb and sons, Bruce (Jane) and Kevin. He is also survived by grandchildren, Brian (Gail) Webb, Brad (Deanne) Webb, Melissa (Robert) De Muth, Nichole (Matthew) Hoeksema and Kevin Kingery II; great-grandchildren, Logan and Caleb Webb and Cloey Hoeksema as well as his wife of 61 years, Doris Kingery. He is also survived by his brother, Wayne (Jerry) Kingery of Indianola and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by son, Danny Jo and daughter, Barbara Donice in their infancy; his parents; brother, Albert; sister, Alice Jacobe and infant great-grandson, Colby De Muth.

Herb was a well driller for Thorp Well Company, a stationary engineer for the Des Moines Public Schools and General United Insurance Co. He retired from Super Valu Warehouse after which Herb began a 20 year love affair with Arizona where he spent the winters with no snow to shovel.

His most favorite part was attending the country western church service at Gold Canyon United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Deits, Rev. Hugh (and Wendy) Rhymes and Sr. Pastor Fred Steinberg, who continue to minister to their gray and thinning hair members as they grow the church from 1500 miles. This is a very joyful and happy place with new friends from all over the country. He had been a 52 year member of Union Park United Methodist Church.

Herb was a doer not a joiner. His loving, gentle, strong, kind, patient, loyal and hard working ways endeared him to all who knew him. He was a "fixer." There was nothing he could not mend, repair or make whole, from a scraped knee to a cozy home. He enjoyed his projects, the most recent was mixing and laying cement and supervising his daughter in building a deck. He enjoyed being her right hand man in building glass flowers.

A memorial service with military honors will be held at Patterson United Methodist Church on Thursday, September 12 (four days before his 85th birthday) at 11 a.m. Fellowship and lunch will follow the service with interment at Winterset Cemetery. In honor of Herb, casual country wear is preferred.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Taylor House Hospice. Arrangements handled by The Cremation Society of Iowa. -
