Brendt R. Pickens, 48, of Newport, Ore., died of complications of pneumonia on Sept. 8, 2012 at Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport.
He was born Aug. 27, 1964 in Des Moines, Iowa. At the age of four days, he was adopted by E. Wayne and Doris Pickens. He attended Sam Case and middle school in Newport and graduated from Ruby Van Meter Special Education program in Iowa.
Since he was three, he lived in Newport with his mom. The last 10 years, he lived in the Shangri La group home and participated in their work program.
Brendt was in Special Olympics track and field, basketball, baseball, bowling and swimming. He loved music and going to dances.
He is survived by his mom in Newport; his dad and brother in Oklahoma; two brothers in Colorado; three uncles and two aunts in Iowa; and one niece in New Mexico.
A celebration of life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at First Presbyterian Church, 227 NE 12th St. in Newport. Memorial donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church; Special Olympics; or Shangri La of South Beach.
