MISSOULA, MONTANA – Aleen H. Blomgren, 87, of Missoula, passed away Sunday, March 8, 2009, in her home, of natural causes.

Aleen was born August 26, 1921, in Independence, Iowa, to Archibald and Alice Trask.

With a background in farming, Aleen’s father moved the family to Black River Falls, Wis., where he had purchased a produce plant. Aleen and her brother Hugh grew up in this rural community of 2,500 people. Aleen was active in Girl Scouts as a girl, earning Girl Scouts of the USA’s highest honor, the Golden Eaglet.

Her accomplishments in music sent her to Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., in 1938 on a music scholarship. Transferring to the University of Iowa in 1941, Aleen met and fell in love with Paul B. Blomgren. They married in August 1942, as Paul headed off to war. The couple had four children, two born in Black River Falls, one in Greencastle, Ind., and one in Bloomington, Ind.

Raising four children and moving around the country following her husband’s career in academia was no easy task, but Aleen adapted well and settled into university life with a grace and openness. She loved meeting new people and entertaining. But the thing Aleen loved most was her family. As a mother, she loved unconditionally and shared her love of life with everyone she met. She was an avid sports fan and loved to play bridge with friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Paul B. Blomgren on March 3, 2009.

She is survived by her son Paul Jr. and his wife Ewa of Rogers, Ark., and their two children; son Dick and his wife Jill of Missoula and their five children; son Bob and his wife Melody of Missoula and their two children; daughter Barbara and her partner Mary of Honolulu; brother Hugh Trask of Glenwood, Iowa, and his two children and their families; and six great-grandchildren.

Per Aleen’s wishes, no formal service will be held. Her family has gathered to honor the recent passing of both of their parents and to celebrate their lives. They ask that those who knew them keep them in their prayers and in their heart. They will be deeply missed.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank the Partners Hospice family for their service and dedication.
