GARY W. FISHER, D.V.M., Winterset

December 16, 1936 - July 10, 2013

Gary W. Fisher, D.V.M, 77, of Winterset died Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at his home.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Monday, July 15th, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset.

A visitation will be held from 1 to 6 p.m., Sunday, July 14th at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset, with family present during that time.

Burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family in Gary’s name.

Gary William Fisher was born December 16, 1935 in rural Greene County, Iowa; the son of Jay and Clara (Bauer) Fisher. He graduated from Paton High School and later attended the University of Iowa where he trained to become an x-ray technician. He later studied pre-med at Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington-Normal, IL where he met his wife, Phyllis Skaggs. Their marriage took place on December 28, 1957 at the Methodist Church in Mason City, Illinois. After their marriage they moved to Ames where he enrolled in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University graduating in 1963. Gary practiced veterinary medicine in Osceola from 1963 until he purchased his own practice in Winterset in 1974, where he has practiced since.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Winterset. He was a member of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA), ISU Alumni Association and was a Mason. Gary liked Harley motorcycles, was an avid reader and enjoyed crosswords. He also enjoyed fishing, sports and especially loved time spent with his kids and grandkids.

Gary is survived by his children, Tamara Fisher (John Jones) of Norwalk; Lisa Nicholson (Todd) of Winterset; Kurt Fisher (Julie) of Urbandale; a daughter-in-law, Penny Fisher of West Des Moines; a sister, Marjorie Thompson of East Alton, IL and seven grandchildren, Weston Jones, Tyler Fisher (Lindsey), Austin Fisher, Sam Nicholson, Jessie Nicholson, Devan Fisher, and Charlee Fisher. He is also survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Leon Skaggs (Sonya) of Park City, MT; Carol Palm (Gordon) of St. Marys, GA; Edwin Skaggs of Aurora, IL; Paul Skaggs of Mason City, IL; Dale Skaggs (Lynda Lambert) of Milwaukee, WI; Dean Skaggs (Pat) of New Carlisle, IN.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Phyllis in 2011; a son, Todd Fisher; a brother, Edwin Fisher and brothers-in-law, Don R. Thompson and Darrell Skaggs.
