Pioneer Contractor Erected Third House in North Topeka

Jeremiah Chubb, age 87, a pioneer contractor of Topeka, died Friday night at his home in Highland Park. He was born in Dauphin county, Pennsylvania, October 14, 1832, and came to Kansas in 1856. He preempted a piece of land later known as the Kilmer quarter.

Later, he came to Topeka and engaged in carpenter work and contracting. He built many of the first homes in Topeka and erected the thrid house in North Topeka.

In 1883 he bought two quarter sections of land near Hoyt, where he engaged in farming and stock raising for more than twenty years. He then moved to Highland Park and has been there for sixteen years.

In 1868 he married Sarah J. Mitchell, of Winterset, Ia. who died April 23, 1872. Three children were born, the only one surviving is Harvey G. Chubb of East Auburn, Cal. On October 2, 1873, he married Kate Alkire, of Topeka. There are four children, who, with their mother, survive as follows: Frank C. Chubb, of Hoyt; Mrs. Ada Lyon, of Osage, Kansas; Arthur A. Chubb, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Walter B. Chubb of Topeka. He was a member of the Methodist church and the I. O. O. F. lodge No. 40. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
