NELS ALFRED HANSEN, Des Moines

Alfred, 86, passed away May 14, 2013 at the Iowa Veterans Home. His funeral will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 18, at Immanuel United Methodist Church, with burial and military honors at Chapel Hill Gardens. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, at Merle Hay Funeral Home.

Nels Alfred Hansen, son of Nels and Ingaborg (Jensen) Hansen, was born May 7, 1927 in Webster, IA. He was united in marriage with Mildred Denning in Stuart, IA, in 1952. Alfred served in the Army during WWII and Korea, and also served in the Air Force.

Alfred liked to tinker. If Al couldn't fix it, it couldn't be fixed. He owned a radio and television repair business for several years, and also taught small engine repair classes at DMACC. Alfred was a member of Kiwanis, served as treasurer for a Boy Scout Troop, and collected Red Kettle Food Pantry donations. He liked to spend time outdoors, camping and fishing.

Alfred was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Louie; his in-laws, Irvin and Hazel Denning; brother-in-law, Carl Denning; and sister-in-law, Bernice (George) Tigges.

Alfred is remembered by his loving wife, Mildred; children, Michael (Tammy), Linda and Gary; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Iowa Veterans Home.
