Lorraine D. Newell, Waukee

Lorraine Newell, 97, died Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Methodist West Medical Center in West Des Moines. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 9, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waukee where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Cremation will follow services and private burial of the cremated remains will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Jamaica, IA at a later date.

Lorraine was born November 25, 1915, in Truro, IA to John and Mae (DeLong) Jones. She lived in IA most of her life with the exception of five years spent in the Los Angeles, CA area. Lorraine was a bookkeeper for most of her working career, including at the R.E.C. in Jefferson and J.C. White Concrete Company.

Lorraine was a member of Catholic Women's League, Bishop Drumm and a charter member of St. Francis Catholic Church in West Des Moines. She was also a steady volunteer at the Valley Junction Care Center and a member for the Care Review Committee there.

Lorraine enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, and travelling with her friends in her retirement. Her great love in life was spending time with her family, whether attending her grandchildren's sporting events or simply family gatherings.

Lorraine is survived by her children, Norma Broderick of Waukee, Jim (Lajla) Day of Margate, FL and Patricia (Charlie) Porter of Waukee; step-children, Gary (Barb) Newell of Humboldt, Tom (Judy) Newell of Urbandale and Nancy (Alvin) Barclay of Woodward; sister-in-law Luella Jones of Tomball, TX, seventeen grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Cleo Day and Arden Newell; her son Ronald Day, two grandchildren, Chuck Day and Julie Dyslin; and her siblings, Anah Mease, Fern Larson, Laura "Bobbie" Cunningham, Benton Jones, Keith Jones and Willa Mae Lull.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Jamaica. Online condolences will be welcomed at IlesCares.com.
