VIOLA MAPES, Slater

October 13, 1928 - March 28, 2013

Viola Mapes, 84, of Slater died Thursday, March 28, 2013.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 2, at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset with burial following in the Winterset Cemetery. A visitation with family present will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, April 1 at Ochiltree’s. Memorials may be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project, Post Office Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.

Viola Mapes, was born in Winterset, Iowa on October 13, 1928; the daughter of Alfred R. DeBok and Dorothy L. (Clopton) DeBok. On December 1, 1946, she was united in marriage to Russell Lee Mapes. In 1966 they moved to Slater where they lived until Russell passed away on December 28, 1992. Viola continued living in Slater until her death on March 28, 2013. Viola and Russell were blessed with three children; Steven, Judy, and Pam.

Viola was a member of the Slater United Methodist Women, The Winterset Four, Emanon Club, The Four Leaf Clover Club, the JF Club, and was a founding member of the Friends of the Slater Public Library. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting, square dancing and reading.

She leaves to celebrate her memory, her two daughters, Judy (Steve) McMullen of Shenandoah, Virginia, and Pam Boryca of Huxley, Iowa; two sisters; Elizabeth (Ralph) Jordan of Adel, Iowa and Janice (Pat) Flannery of Indianola, Iowa; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Viola is preceded in death by a son, Steven Mapes, an infant brother, Eugene DeBok; a sister, Betty McKinney and a grandson, Ryder Mapes.
