Shirley Ann Friedmeyer, 74, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center.
Shirley was born August 25, 1938, in Patterson, Iowa, to Lee and Emma Eckstein. She overcame a great deal of adversity in her life and was a wonderful and nurturing mother and grandmother, the rock of her family. Shirley retired from Des Moines Public Schools in 1994, after 24 years of service where she was a manager for the Food & Nutrition Department. She enjoyed listening to sports, especially the Cubbies.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 59 years, Gerald; children, Gerald (Sally) Friedmeyer, Jr., Gail (Kern) Reese, Marsha Mote, Lisa Friedmeyer, Becky Lowe and Daniel (Jenna) Friedmeyer; twelve grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brother, Lee (Thelma) Eckstein, Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, and son-in-law, Butch Lowe.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be directed to University of Iowa, Eye and Retina Department to be used for ADNIV research.
