Horace Tate Dies After Heart Attack

Horace Tate, former Winterset resident, died in surgery, at a hospital in Victorville, California, last Friday at the age of 72. Mr. Tate who had been serving as a night clerk in a hotel at Victorville, suffered a heart attack, Wednesday, January 29th, and died at 4 o’clock in the morning of the 31st.

Mr. Tate was born in Winterset, July 13, 1891, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Tate; his father was a hardware merchant, and he was one of a family of seven children.

Much of his life was spent in Winterset, and he and his wife, the former Mabel Goshorn of Winterset were associated with her father in the publication of the Winterset News for a number of years. Mr. and Mrs. Tate moved to Des Moines and he was employed by the state. Mrs. Tate died in Des Moines, and seven years ago he moved to California, where he had since resided.

Surviving are three brothers, Dean Tate, of Yucalpa, Calif., and John and Glen Tate of northwest Iowa, and three sisters, Miss Laura Tate of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Mrs. J. K. (Gertrude) McKinney of Yucalpa and Mabel, who lives with the family in northern California.

A memorial service for Mr. Tate was held Monday, February 3rd, in Yucalpa; the body was cremated, and interment will be later in Winterset.

Mr. Tate had spent Christmas in Tuscon, Arizona with Mr. and Mrs. Odie Wilson, former Winterset residents who moved last summer from St. Petersburg, Florida to Tuscon. Mrs. Wilson and the late Mrs. Tate were sisters.
