Tjarks Dies at Age 41

Gary Lee Tjarks of rural St. Charles died of lung cancer on Saturday, July 25, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He was 41 years old.

Born in Iowa Falls on Feb. 3, 1940, he was the son of Ernest William Tjarks and Alta Marie Whipple.

On Oct. 24, 1966, he married Delores Cleland in Vermillion, S.D.

Mr. Tjarks came to St. Charles in 1966. He was a truck driver by occupation, and was employed by Inland Mills in Des Moines.

He was a member of the Iowa Falls Lutheran Church. He also belonged to the Sportsmen’s Club and was president of the Coon Hunter’s Club of Winterset.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Colleen; and a brother, Everett.

Survivors include his wife, Delores; three sons, Ronnie and Gary Jr. of Iowa Falls and Doug of Indianola; a step-son, Larry Kooker of St. Charles; a daughter, Shelly, of St. Charles; three brothers, Donnie and Ernest of Iowa Falls and Dick of Hiawatha; three sisters, Shirley Caruth and Bonnie Bahr of Iowa Falls and Joann McGee of Green; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Tjarks were held Tuesday, July 28, at Collins Funeral Home in Winterset. Pastor John Hanzalik officiated. Burial was at St. Charles Cemetery.
