Accident Fatal to Macksburg Man

Gary Mack Herren, 27, of Macksburg was killed in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Sept. 16, when he apparently lost control of the pickup truck he was driving.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Dept. said Herren, who was along in his vehicle, was headed east on county road G61 about 1 ½ miles east of Macksburg when the accident happened. Law officers speculate the right front wheel of Herren’s pickup dropped off the road onto the shoulder causing him to lose control. The vehicle went into a grader ditch and hit an embankment and stop sign, rolling at least once.

Herren, who was thrown from his vehicle by the impact of the crash, died of head and neck injuries. Dr. Thomas Bergstrom, county medical examiner, set the time of death at arund 2 or 3 a.m. Herren’s body was discovered by a passing motorist about 7 a.m., the Sheriff’s dept. said.

County road G61 has been posted closed since July 6 for pavement resurfacing, according to the county engineer’s office.

Herren was the son of Ralph Herren of Macksburg and was employed by Victor Edwards Trucking.

His death marks the third highway fatality in Madison county this year.
