ROBERT KEITH BUTNER, Athens, Ohio

Robert Keith Butner, died Monday, Mary 19, 2001, at his home in Athens. He was professor emeritus of mathematics at Ohio University.

Born 13, 1921, in Duncombe, Iowa, he was the son of Morgan and Irma Noreen Knox Butner.

He graduated from the University of Iowa, Northwestern University Midshipmen's School, Pre-Radar and Radar Schools at Harvard and M.I.T. He served as a lieutenant (j.g.). He married Phyllis Frick on Jan. 27, 1944, at Memorial Church, Harvard Yard, Cambridge, Mass. After serving in the Pacific, he returned to the University of Iowa where he received master and doctorate degrees. He began teaching at Ohio University in 1952 and retired in July 1988. He served as chairman of the mathematics department, led several National Science Foundation Summer Institutes for Mathematics teachers, served on Faculty Senate and served many years on the athletic board. Until recently, he was involved in the Independent Study program.

He was a member of the Mathematical Association of America, the Green and White Club, the Ohio University Trustees Academy, and First Presbyterian Church, where he was elder and treasurer. He formerly was on the board of directors for The Banc Stock Group Inc.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, two children, Janice Kelly of Big Rapids, Mich., and Jeffrey Butner of Athens, and two grandchildren, Jason and Jeffrey Kelly of Big Rapids, Mich.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Knight.

Memorial services will be held March 31 at 1 p.m. At First Presbyterian Church. Interment of ashes will be at Masonic Cemetery, Dallas Center, Iowa.
