LAWRENCE W. HAYES, Rock Island

Memorial Services for Lawrence W. “Larry” Hayes, 79, Rock Island, formerly of Bettendorf, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Visitation will follow the service. Mr. Hayes died Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at his home.

Lawrence was born May 29, 1923, in Earlham, Iowa, the son of George O. and Clara B. (Tough) Hayes. He married Beverly Weesner in 1947 in Earlham. Larry married Jean Efnor in 1983 in Elgin, Ill. He married Martha M. Hagerman in 1999 in Bettendorf.

He graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering. Larry had worked as an engineer at the Rock Island Arsenal and retired in 1993 with 21 years of government service. He also had worked for J I Case Co., Rock Island; Union Carbide, Centerville, Iowa; Whirlpool Corp., St. Joseph, Mich.; and Maytag, Newton, Iowa.

Larry was a World War II veteran, having graduated from the air cadet program and was trained and assigned to fly a B-17 when the war ended. He also was a member of the Air Force Reserve and retired as a lieutenant colonel.

He was a member of the Polka Club of Iowa, Merry Rounders, Nation Rifle Association, National Society of Professional Engineers and member and past president of the Solo Steppers. Larry was also a 32nd degree Mason and enjoyed photography.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pathway Hospice, Rock Island, or University of Iowa College of Engineering.

Survivors include his wife, Martha; daughters and a son-in-law, Nancy and Richard Soucek, Seward, Neb., and Judith MontBlanc, Madison, Wisc.; sons and a daughter-in-law, Thomas and Janel Hayes, Excelsior, Minn., and David Hayes, Mesa, Ariz.; Stepdaughter, Donna Carmack, and her husband, Tony, Rock Island; grandsons, Jason, Jared, and Travis MontBlanc; step-grandchildren, James Soucek and Cathy Carmack; and nephews, Brian Searcy, Muscatine, Iowa, and Lynn Searcy, Davenport.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Maxine Silberhorn.
