Jane was born November 8, 1947 in Des Moines, Iowa to Marion and Mildred Pryor DeVault. She grew up in Earlham and graduated from Earlham High School with the class of 1966. While in high school, Jane was very involved in the school paper. After graduating, Jane moved to Des Moines before moving to Wyoming for a short time before being involved in a serious automobile accident. After the accident, she moved back to Des Moines while going through rehabilitation for a good three years. After she was released she moved back to Earlham to be close to her parents and continue her rehabilitation. Throughout this time, Jane was determined that she would not let her disabilities stop her from leading an active and normal life. From Earlham, she moved to Adel to make her home and lived there the majority of her adult life. She was united in marriage in 1970 which later ended in divorce and then remarried in 1984 to Billy Joe Payne. Jane worked at the County Home in Adel for over 20 years performing secretarial work before being employed at the West Central Mental Health Center where she worked for 15 years before retiring due to health reasons. She enjoyed this work very much and felt that she could help by relating to her own challenges she had to overcome in life. Jane loved horses and throughout her childhood enjoyed showing horses earning her several showmanship awards. She also enjoyed crocheting, knitting, ceramics and crafts in general.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Marion and Mildred DeVault and her husband Billy Joe Payne in August of 1992.

Jane leaves behind to cherish her memory, her beloved children, Lori (James Belding) DeVault of Earlham, Iowa, David Foerster of Grinnell, Iowa, and Heather Payne of Boone, Iowa; stepson, William Payne; sisters, Sue DeVault of Dallas, Texas, Diane DeVault, of West Des Moines, and Barb Hentges, of Clive, Iowa; grandchildren, Alicia West of De Soto, Scott West of Earlham, Darroll Foerster, Elizabeth Foerster, Christina Foerster, and David Foerster, all of Grinnell and Riley Milburn of Boone and a host of nieces, nephews and friend all of whom will miss her greatly.
