Elzia Beem Dies at 66

World War II veteran, Elzia Coleman Beem died August 20 at Veterans Hospital in Des Moines at the age of 66.

Son of Clarence and Iva Weaver Beem, he was born November 16, 1910 in Madison County.

On September 21, 1943 he married Erika Scherm in New York City. Mr. Beem served in the U.S. Navy for five years on the USS Arkansas during World War II.

A member of the American Legion and VFW, Mr. Beem also belonged to the Lutheran Church and the American Bowling Congress.

He was the tractor mechanic and parts man for Allis Chalmers Equipment with the Clarence Sweeney Co. and later became the manager of Iowa State Liquor Store in Winterset until his retirement in 1976.

Survivors are his wife, Erika; mother, Iva; and three sons, Rod, Richard of Coon Rapids and Karl of Kansas City; and four grandchildren. Survivors also include two brothers, Eldon of Winterset and Elwood of Beatrice, Nebraska; a sister Agatha Agan of Winterset and several nieces and nephews.

Pastor Robert Toso officiated at the funeral held Tuesday, August 23, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church. Military graveside services were held by the American Legion and VFW at Winterset Cemetery.
