Brenda Mapes, 68, of Winterset died Sunday, December 23, 2012 at her home.

A visitation will be held 2 to 8 p.m., Thursday, December 27th at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset, where family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.. Services will be held privately with family. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Winterset Public Library will be appreciated.

Brenda Jo Henrichs was born December 27, 1943 in Sturgis, Kentucky; the daughter of Walter O. and Wilma (Allen) Henrichs. She graduated from Winterset High School in 1962 and later married her high school sweetheart, Gean Mapes on October 2, 1962 at the Methodist Church in Winterset.

Brenda retired from Winterset Public School after serving 20 years as teacher’s aide. After her retirement, she continued serving the community as a volunteer at the gift shop at the Madison County Hospital.

Brenda was an avid traveler, enjoying several trips with friends and the Union State Bank’s Golden Opportunity Club. She also loved gardening and outings with the Red Hat Ladies. She loved animals, especially her dogs Maggie and Tootsie. Most of all, Brenda will be remembered as a loving sister, friend and a devoted life partner to her husband Gean.

She is survived by her husband, Gean Mapes of Winterset; sisters, Joyce Parker (Larry) of Tennessee; Barbara Newman (Wade) of Springfield, MO; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
