Mulvihill Rites Held Monday

James J. Mulvihill, a well-known farmer of the Irish Settlement in northeast Madison county, died last Friday morning, Jan. 28, at Lawton, Oklahoma. He and his wife were enroute to visit a son in California when death occurred.

Mr. Mulvihill was 73 years of age, and had lived his entire life in Lee township of this county.

A son of Daniel and Julia Cunningham Mulvihill, he was born July 17, 1898. On May 25, 1921, he was married to Kay Watts.

Mr. Mulvihill was active in a number of township and county organizations, and was a former secretary of the Iowa State Hereford Breeder’s association, and a former director of the Iowa Beef Producer’s association.

He is survived by his wife; five sons, James, Jr. of Ames, Iowa, Dan of La Jolla, Calif., Jack of Tampa, Florida, Mark of Des Moines and Robert of Lee township; three daughters, Mrs. Mary Kay Darnell of Des Moines, Sister Sheila of Chicago, Illinois and Suzanne Mulvihill of Des Moines; 25 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Rosary services for Mr. Mulvihill were held Sunday, Jan. 30, at 3 p.m. and at 7 p.m. at the home. The funeral mass was offered at 10 a.m. Monday from St. Patrick’s Catholic church in the Irish Settlement, with the Rev. Larry Watts serving as principal co-celebrant. He was assisted by Msgr. John Higgins of Winterset, Msgr. John Reynolds of Des Moines, and the Reverends James Kiernan of Council Bluffs, Richard Bergman of the Irish Settlement, Lawrence Beeson of Council Bluffs, and Charles Phelan of Des Moines.

Burial was in St. Patrick’s cemetery.
