John Wintrode Dies in Florida

John H. Wintrode, one of Madison county’s most distinguished soldiers during a long military career, died Thursday, March 11, at Miami, Fla., where he had lived in recent years. He was 72 years of age.

Mr. Wintrode was born April 7, 1898, a son of Dr. and Mrs. J. H. Wintrode of Winterset. He attended Wentworth Military academy, and left that to enlist in Winterset’s Company A, 168th Infantry regiment, Iowa National Guard, for service in the Mexican border troubles in 1916.

Upon enlistment he was made first sergeant of Company A, and served as a sergeant through three wars. During World War I, he served with the company through all the major campaigns on the western front in France. In one battle, he took command of his company after all the commissioned officers had been killed or wounded. He was awarded the American Distinguished Service cross, and the French Croix de Guerre.

When World War II broke out, he returned to military service in the re-activated Rainbow division, and served through that conflict and also the Korean war. He retired in 1960.

Mr. Wintrode is survived by his wife, the former Katherine Goshorn of Winterset; two sons, John H. Wintrode of Miami, who is a West Point graduate and a pilot with the National Airlines, and Major Joe Wintrode, now serving in the U.S. army.

He also leaves two grandchildren.

Mr. Wintrode’s ashes are being returned to Winterset for burial in the Winterset cemetery this Wednesday, with grave-side services at 10 a.m., conducted by the Rev. John Fink, pastor of the First United Presbyterian church of Winterset. There will be military ritual by the American Legion.
