MERLIN TIBBEN, SR., Des Moines

Merlin E. Tibben, Sr., 86, of the 4700 block of Northwest Piekenbrock Drive died of asbestosis Tuesday at home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at McLaren's Funeral Chapel, with burial at Resthaven Cemetery.

Mr. Tibben was born in Exira and had lived there and in Oakland, Calif., and Bevington before moving to Des Moines in 1974. He was a farmer and a boilermaker with Union Local 83 in Kansas City, Mo., before retiring. He was a member of Eastgate Masonic Lodge, Des Moines Consistory and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine.

He is survived by his wife, Melba Knox Tibben; two sons, Frank of Truro and Merlin Jr., of Johnston, two daughters, Kathleen L'Estrange of Ankeny and Yolanda Chitwood of Des Moines; a stepdaughter, Jean Thomas of Springfield, Ore.; a stepson, John Knox of Des Moines; a brother Don of Atlantic; a sister, Elaine Kopaska of Guthrie Center; eight grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Caroline.

Friends may call fron 6 to 8 p.m. Today at the funeral chapel, where a Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Intrust Hospice.
